What our riders say

"I can't wait to return"

I’ve spent two wonderful long weekends at Haras du Coussoul this year and can’t wait to return. I was looking to improve my dressage skills somewhere accessible by train, and the option to try riding with a neckrope (which aligns with my “less is more” ideal for riding) drew me in. The Haras is stunning, set in the heart of Provence, and Alicia is a warm, passionate host whose love for her horses is contagious. The horses are beautifully cared for and a joy to ride. I especially appreciated the private lessons and how Alicia noticed my preferences the first time round and proposed an even more tailored programme the second time, centred around neckrope riding. Having done riding holidays for over a decade, I tend to revisit places with great teams, amazing horses, and unforgettable settings. Haras du Coussoul has all that, plus a special magic that’s hard to describe. Meeting and cuddling the foals raised by Alicia was the cherry on the cake, and the Camargue beach ride was a fun complement to the dressage sessions. If you haven’t experienced Camargue horses or the region yet, and love gallops on the beach, it’s worth adding the option.

LUSITANO, THE IDEAL COMPANION FOR DRESSAGE

The Lusitano is one of the oldest and most revered breeds. Known for their elegance, this Portuguese breed combines power, agility, intelligence and generous temperament, making it ideal for dressage, spectacle and even show jumping. Lusitanos are recognizable by their distinctive facial features, particularly their convex profile, often referred to as a « Roman nose ». The Lusitano’s agile and elevated gaits provide a smooth and comfortable ride and ensure a unique adventure for riders.

At Haras du Coussoul, Alicia and Catherine work every day to produce horses with generous hearts and close to humans. Their foals grow up in herds with a retired broodmare, are gently handled from a young age, and are broken in patiently, with a focus on groundwork to establish a trusting relationship between horse and rider.

At the heart of the studfarm, is a deep commitment to animal welfare, ensuring that each horse is trained with respect for its natural rhythm and abilities. This caring and individualized approach forms the core of their philosophy and is reflected in the remarkable achievements of horses like Sultan and Mistral du Coussoul, both ridden by the renowned Alizée Froment.

About this ride

Nomad Riders in Provence

Last visit - February 2025

From the moment you pass through the iron gate and follow the beautiful pathway lined with poplars, you are immersed in a Provençal atmosphere. Little by little, you start to catch sight of two wonderful old farmhouses surrounded by olive trees, fields and horses - and you start feeling as if you are already home.

As a dressage and Lusitanos lover, the Haras du Coussoul immediately felt like heaven to me. Walking through the fields with Alicia was my favorite part ; she knows every horse so well and has a story for each one - whether it is about a funny name like Tipsy or an impressive pedigree. Her love for her horses is immediately visible, and you can feel how much she enjoys talking about them and sharing her passion.

During my stay, I had the chance to ride Géricault du Coussoul, a pure product of the Haras, under the guidance of the Triple Championne de France Ludivine Tudela. Riding such a well-trained horse is a feeling that is difficult to describe - even his smallest movements created new sensations you rarely experience. My teacher for the day, Ludivine, took the time to explain everything with precision. She was an amazing instructor, and even after one session, I could already feel how much I had learned.

For me, this is the place to be if you are interested in refining your dressage skills, riding world-class Lusitanos, and training with a Dressage Champion, while staying in a stunning setting.
